Frequently Asked Questions

What are ethically-sourced gemstones?

Ethically-sourced gemstones refers to stones that have not been acquired in conditions that are unsafe or harmful to any worker or the environment from which they are harvested. These high-quality gemstones are sourced responsibly during each stage of the process: from extraction, transportation, cutting, to polishing, ultimately ending up in your hands. Pack for Paris makes an effort to parter with vendors who provide eco-friendly and sustainable products.

Some pieces are made with vintage Czech glass buttons. What are those?

Pack for Paris has a collection of close to 3,000 vintage Czech glass buttons, many of which are new old stock and still on the original button card. The majority are fabricated between 1890-1940s, making some of them over 100 years old! These pressed glass buttons originate from the Jablonec region of the Czech Republic. Repurposing these buttons into something new and beautiful makes them truly unique. Setting these little “gems” in a bezel or prong, creates a modern bohemian vintage aesthetic. All vintage buttons are limited stock or one-of-a kind, making the jewelry extra special. Once sold, that particular button will only be available if more of the same buttons are in stock, but the design of the jewelry can be made again using a different button. Check the store periodically for newly-uploaded items or message us if you’re looking for something in particular.

Before setting these buttons, the glass shank on the back is normally grinded down and each hand-painted button is treated with several layers of sealant to preserve the paint. We highly recommend reviewing our Jewelry Care tips before wearing these pieces.

What is gold fill?

Gold-filled materials are an excellent and affordable alternative to solid gold, at a fraction of the cost of high carat gold. At the same time, gold fill is more durable and retains more value than gold-plated pieces. Gold-filled jewelry is mechanically bonded to a base of either brass or sterling silver. It is more durable and a higher percentage of gold than gold-plated. In order to be classified as “GF”, there must be a gold layer on the product that’s at least 10-karat, mechanically applied to a base metal; the karat gold layer must also be at least 1/20 (or 5%) of the item's total weight. Gold fill is hypoallergenic (lead and nickel free) and generally safe for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies.
